That is what I thought too, this was taken a few years ago and it was winter time.

“Your Belgians are beautiful. Hope they won!

Oh Judy I wish these were my horses, but sadly no. They did however win!!

“Wonderful pic. i love draft horses

JoAnn drafts are my favorite too, especially Percheron’s.

This photo was from the Draft Horse Pull at the fair. I go every year, it one of the highlights of the fair for me. This team did win, the sled is called a boat, which weighs about 1400 pounds,  the weights are added once each team does a pass, they said each block weighs about 400 pounds. I believe the pass is pulling the load past 24 feet. A little lingo they use, hooking up, the team on their way on the field to hook and pull, on deck, the team next up, in the hole, the team waiting to go after the on deck team. It was down to two teams, the ones that won last year and this team, the weight was over 7000 pounds and it was very close, winning team made the pass and the runner up made 22 feet. They are spectacular to watch, the horses must work together in order to pull. Here are a few more shots…

“Those are some great fair photos. Love the first chicken one.

Gizmo said…

“That first chicken is amazing! The duck (3rd photo) looks like my muscovy’s, but mine are all black…never have seen a brown one before

He was one of my favorites too! If I ever live some where I can have chickens I want one of these just because he looks so cool Smile And I think I could make some pretty nice jewelry from those feathers, well only from the naturally shed ones that is.

Gizmo I wondered what kind of duck that was, I thought he looked very interesting.

Fair 2013 (22)

Thanks everyone for the well wishes on my fair entries, overall I did pretty well. I forgot to take a photo of my jewelry before fair but here are the things I placed with…

Titan February 28, 2013 (4)

Titan is doing well with his training in Tennessee!

Training Update

Just a little update on training, Titan continues to progress and is doing quite nicely, Cheyenne has improved from a few weeks ago and is gung ho for the birds as usual! This past week some of the dogs had to work on doubles and a blind. The doubles were hand thrown birds (dead flyers) and all the dogs did these but the blind was only for the *Senior Hunting (SH) dogs and it was placed behind the gunner, which can be difficult for some dogs. The blind bird is placed in an area in the field without the dog being able to see it or mark it as we call it then the handler has to literally handle the dog; giving directions by hand signals to the dog in the field so they can get to the bird, you can read about handling here

Okay this is my first attempt at Paint, and it is no where as good as 2 BrownDawgs but it gives you an idea of our set up for the day. The two orange x’s represent the bird throwers, me and my friend Michelle, the red x is the handler and the dog and then the duck is the planted blind. We each threw our birds in the direction of the white dashed line one at a time and the dog had to mark (commit to memory) these birds so they could pick them up when sent by the handler. The few dogs that had to do the blind did this retrieve after picking up the memory birds.

So that’s it for now!

*Senior Hunting Tests consist of double marked retrieves, and relatively simple blind retrieves on land and water, as well as honoring the retrieve of another competitor.

County Fair

This is fair week for me and it is always a very busy time of getting my entries ready and then heading to the fair almost daily just to hang out and enjoy all it has to offer. I have been to many fairs over the years but the Shiawassee County Fair is the best! The fair grounds are spectacular with beautiful animal barns and they have free surrey rides all day that will pick you up and drop you off any where at the fair. Surrey rides

This is a beautiful team of draft horses!

I started entering in the adult open competition a few years ago when my cousin urged me to do so. My entries are usually in the classes of baked goods, jewelry, and crafts however last year I tried a new class, amateur photography, but did not get any placements. I am not one to give up easily so I entered several different photography categories this year and success I received a blue on one of them, the color four legged animal category with my photo of Bitsy I took this past spring when she was here.

Blue Ribbon award for my photo of Bitsy!

The photography section has very stiff competition as there are many great amateur photographers in my county so I am so delighted with this placement. The other two photos I entered did not get a placement, these were the categories of color 8×10 enlargement and 4-4×6 color photos matted in one frame.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppies                             Moon

It is so hard to know what they are looking for but I might try the moon one again next year and maybe do it in black and white and I already have thoughts about my four legged animal entry Winking smile Anyway it is fun and exciting!

My other entries this year consisted of my 5 Minute Fudge and a necklace I made.

Fudge

Coffee Jasper Necklace

All in all I did very well at the fair this year and I could not be more pleased!!

This fair has been going on since 1850 and started as a one day picnic but progressed over the years to what it is now. In 1988 it moved to the current grounds because it out grew the original fair grounds located at McCurdy Park, you can read more here

So far this year I have taken well over 200 photos in just two days and have been referred to by my friend as a shutterbug, hmmmm if I had to choose a bug to be that would be my preference, although it might be kind of cool to be a dragonfly Rolling on the floor laughing

My favorite event at the fair is the Draft Horse Pulls, these horses are magnificent and the strength they posses is unbelievable! The Percheron are my favorite of the drafts but I would take any of them in a heart beat, next to dogs they are my favorite, well then there’s the cows, goats, cats, oh who am I kidding I love all animals Open-mouthed smile

I put together a slide show of just a few of my many photos, okay a lot of my many photos for you to see, hope you enjoy them as much as I do taking them.

If it won’t play try here

So that’s my county fair, how about you, is there a favorite fair you like to attend?

I love you mom but…..

Went out to visit with Titan last Thursday; he is doing wonderful and is always so excited to see me and this time my brother was able to go with me. Titan is supposed to be his dog but I had to rub it in when he ran to me to get his lovins first; but you know what they say about pay backs…as soon as the ducks came out I was history! This was actually his first day on ducks and I was so impressed with my boy, yes MY BOY!! I forgot my camera so I took pictures with my phone and they turned out horribly blurry but here are a few that will have to do.

Got a little training in with Cheyenne and I do mean little! She was acting like a big silly girl, you would have thought she had never done this before. So hopefully this week will be better.

I also visited the new momma Chemmy and her babies…oh the puppy breath Open-mouthed smile I will try to remember the camera this week so I can get pictures, they are adorable.
