We decided to join our friend Gizmo and his buddy Finn for Parks Day.  A day designed to celebrate and share the beauty of your favorite park.

One of our favorite parks is Island Lake Recreation Area,

Map picture

this is just one of our many state parks here in Michigan. This park is huge, with one of the nation’s safest shooting ranges. The park has great canoeing, volley ball courts, picnic shelters, swimming and cabins to rent. Offering a 4,000-acre park with an “up north” feel, with a mixture of open brush land to mature hardwood forest, with some pockets of open meadows mixed in. Island Lake is the only balloon port in the state park system. Balloons usually take off in the early morning or late evening, depending on the wind and weather. (Michigan DNR)

I like this place because not only is it beautiful, Island Lake Rec Area (6)

there are many out of the way places for me to get Titan out to do some training when I take him with me to work.

  1. That looks like a great park! Do they have a designated dog training area to train off lead? Around here they have cracked down and are writing tickets for dogs off lead. We have stopped all training in state parks unless they have a designated dog training area. That is a big reason we bough the Omega membership.

    1. I searched and searched but could not find the guidelines for dogs, so I made sure I drove to an isolated area before getting out, we ran into some hunters one day. This year I am going to ask someone so I don’t get in any trouble, might be sorry when I ask but it is better than a ticket. Although I did not see anyone other than the guy at the front gate. I know years ago you were allowed to take your dog to the designated area on the beach to let them swim.
