A DAY AT THE PARK

Yesterday my brother and I took Maia and Titan to  Sleepy Hollow for some fun! This is a state park near me and I love that name don’t you, reminds me of the headless horseman. Since the park rules say dogs must be on a six foot lead my thought was how the heck are they going to be able to stretch their legs if they only have six feet, so…I multiplied that by about 8+ and gave them 50 feet, found a secluded area and hoped we wouldn’t get caught Winking smile

I worked on Maia’s recall, she did great and it helps being able to reel her in so she caught on quick, listen or get pulled in, so soon she started coming to me pretty quickly.

Titan had some bumper fun and I worked with my brother on the proper commands and how to throw the bumpers for him. I kept the training very short because I wanted them to enjoy the beautiful day we had here just exploring and running around, it was in the 70’s, thank you Indian Summer!! They both had a great time sniffing all the good smells and Titan even watered a tree for the park! I didn’t get a whole lot of good photos but here a few random shots…

Genetics 101 Part 2

Jan commented “I’m always fascinated to see how some pups seem to be copies of the dam and others of the sire.” This is very true and it is also true that it could be the grand parents that you see in the pups and that is why I study the grand parents of the pedigree. My mentor always says that you are likely to get the grand parents coming through on the pups so it’s important to know what qualities they have before doing your breeding. I tried to find some photos to show the similarities between sire and son and dam and daughter, these were the best I could come up with without staging a photo shoot of the four of them, but I think you can see how much Maia and Titan look like their parents.

      Wow how lucky you are, as you can see I don’t always follow the rules for that but I guess I better be careful because 2 Brown Dawgs said some friends of hers received hefty fines for not having their dogs on lead.

  3. Great pictures in the park. Yeah, you have to be careful in state parks doing any kind of training. I know of people who have received tickets with very steep fines. They discourage all dog training in the state parks except in designated dog training areas. It is a shame.

    Maia sure looks like her mom and Titan like her dad. I would say that in the case of our dogs, they are more of a blend of the two parents.

    1. I will keep that in mind, I did not know you could get fined, just figured they would tell me to leave or get them on a lead.

      Isn’t it funny how that whole thing works out with each pup, the other male pups from the photos I’ve seen look like a combination of Riva and Albert but Maia’s sister does look like Riva also except she is dark brown.

    I think recalls are probably one of the hardest things to train, as you know I still struggle with Delilah. 🙂

    I can her mother in Maia’s stance, but Titan looks exactly like his dad! Wow. They are all beautiful dogs. 🙂

      Yeah I hate doing recalls, some dogs get it quick and others (Riva) have other ideas 🙂

      I love that they look so much like their parents, I am going to take some photos of Maia and Riva more head on and then you can really see the resemblance. I love that Titan looks just like his dad because Albert is so handsome and one of the reasons I fell in love with him. It’s funny my friends who own Albert mixed the two of them up one day because if you just look quick it’s hard to tell them apart 🙂

  9. We agree what can you do on a 6′ lead that’s no fun. Glad you got to have fun and no one caught you. Parks are so great all new smells. Sounds like everyone did great on their practices. Those are great pictures 🙂

  10. I’m finally getting a chance to check in on my favorite blogs. Your “kids” look so happy and joyful in the park. What beautiful photos. Poppy and I struggle with recalls. Sometimes she does well, but looks bewildered like “I’m not sure what I did to get the praise.” 🙂 I’m enjoying the mini genetics lesson…I understand so little about the topic.

    I know you are being impacted by the hurricane as we are here in PA. Hope you are safe and remain so throughout the next few days.

    1. Thank you!! I’m glad you like the post on genetics, I usually have to read it over and over and then refer back again and again but I figure if I do that enough I will eventually have it memorized 🙂

      We have high winds and the report says it will probably hit the east side of the state and cause some pretty huge waves in the great lakes, I pray we don’t lose power and those closest to the shore are not hit to hard. Stay safe!!

      1. I’m getting there. Still some pain and fatigue, but it is better. I hope the cooler weather makes gets rid of the ticks for a few months. I pulled a deer tick from Poppy. She’s on Frontline, but sometimes ticks get through that. Fortunately she’s vaccinated against Lyme’s. Thanks so much. And I hop you didn’t loose power. Ours came back on finally.

        1. So glad to hear you are doing some better. I have never had to get a tick off the dogs and I am sure I would not like it, nasty little buggers!!

          We lost power for just a couple hours, funny thing is is was only parts of my town that did, weird!
