This is fair week for me and it is always a very busy time of getting my entries ready and then heading to the fair almost daily just to hang out and enjoy all it has to offer. I have been to many fairs over the years but the Shiawassee County Fair is the best! The fair grounds are spectacular with beautiful animal barns and they have free surrey rides all day that will pick you up and drop you off any where at the fair.
This is a beautiful team of draft horses!
I started entering in the adult open competition a few years ago when my cousin urged me to do so. My entries are usually in the classes of baked goods, jewelry, and crafts however last year I tried a new class, amateur photography, but did not get any placements. I am not one to give up easily so I entered several different photography categories this year and success I received a blue on one of them, the color four legged animal category with my photo of Bitsy I took this past spring when she was here.
The photography section has very stiff competition as there are many great amateur photographers in my county so I am so delighted with this placement. The other two photos I entered did not get a placement, these were the categories of color 8×10 enlargement and 4-4×6 color photos matted in one frame.
It is so hard to know what they are looking for but I might try the moon one again next year and maybe do it in black and white and I already have thoughts about my four legged animal entry Anyway it is fun and exciting!
My other entries this year consisted of my 5 Minute Fudge and a necklace I made.
All in all I did very well at the fair this year and I could not be more pleased!!
This fair has been going on since 1850 and started as a one day picnic but progressed over the years to what it is now. In 1988 it moved to the current grounds because it out grew the original fair grounds located at McCurdy Park, you can read more here
So far this year I have taken well over 200 photos in just two days and have been referred to by my friend as a shutterbug, hmmmm if I had to choose a bug to be that would be my preference, although it might be kind of cool to be a dragonfly
My favorite event at the fair is the Draft Horse Pulls, these horses are magnificent and the strength they posses is unbelievable! The Percheron are my favorite of the drafts but I would take any of them in a heart beat, next to dogs they are my favorite, well then there’s the cows, goats, cats, oh who am I kidding I love all animals
I put together a slide show of just a few of my many photos, okay a lot of my many photos for you to see, hope you enjoy them as much as I do taking them.
If it won’t play try here
So that’s my county fair, how about you, is there a favorite fair you like to attend?
This looks like so much fun! I love your photos and am so happy you won a blue ribbon! The necklace is so pretty too! I had no idea you were into crafting – I love crafts too! Would love to see more of your creations featured here. 🙂

Thank you so much Laurie. I was quite surprised I received the blue on my photo, I secretly was hoping to get any placement, but just thought no way!
I will try to add more craft posts! What kind of crafts do you like?

It’s a great photo so I’m not surprised by the blue! I love all types of arts and crafts – scrap booking, collage, jewelry, fabric arts – really anything handmade and creative. I love the necklace you made and would love to see more of your work on your blog!

Congratulations Misty it is always wonderful when you are acknowledged for your efforts!
Here in New England we have a fair called the Big E, it is also known as Eastern States Exposition. It is a fair held in Massachusetts which is about 45 to 50 minutes from my house, but people come from everywhere to attend!
This fair is the collaboration of all the New England states, each state has their own building where they showcase resources, food and crafts from their area. I always have to go to the Maine building for a baked potato and the Vermont building for apple pie and brown sugar candy. 🙂
That is probably the uniquest aspect of this fair.
You can read all about it here http://www.thebige.com/fair/

Congratulations on your wins! That is so great! We went to our local fair last week, I actually got to see a cow show, which is a lot different than a dog show! It was pretty neat to watch! I entered a few of my pictures into their amateur photography class to, but none of them placed:(
My favorite part of the fair was the fried cheese on a stick that I ate! Yum!

Great photos. I love fairs. There’s nothing more American than a good old country fair! Now, where exactly can I find this recipe for the 5 minute fudge? Do tell!

Well done on winning with your photo. It is a great pic and well deserving, although I think the others were as well, so I agree – who knows exactly what they are looking for.

I wish we could get feed back from the judges so we would know why or why not certain things placed.

I love the County Fair, too. It has been a while since I have made it to one, but growing up fairtime was my favorite part of the summer. I trained my dogs all year long to show them on the first night of the fair. I also enjoyed camping at the fairgrounds with my cousins in the people sleeper portion of their horse trailer. And who can forget the carnival rides and deliciously non-nutritious carnival food??!!

I love fair food 🙂 I think it is just the atmosphere that makes it taste so good 😉 I would love to camp at the fair even though I only live 5 minutes away it would be fun to do.
